A large number of emerging actors, directors and playwrights relied on the Berkshire Theatre Festival's Playhouse for local performances in the 1970s. This demand created the need to build a second stage, named the Unicorn Theatre. In 1996, the Unicron Theatre was moved from the festival's playhouse into a new, adjacent building, expanding the theatre's seating capacity to 122 seats.
